Mission: The Children's Cabinet exists to keep children safe and families together by offering services and resources that address unmet needs in our community, through a unique and effective cooperative effort between the private sector and public agencies in Northern Nevada.

Volunteering

Seeking Board Members? No

Volunteer Needs: The Children's Cabinet welcomes the support of volunteers through corporate or individual efforts.  Annual volunteer opportunities include:  1)Art of Childhood Auction and Gala - in 2009, (over 20 volunteers helped The Children's Cabinet raise $90,000 in support of the Safe Place Youth Homeless Shelter and Family Violence Prevention Services; 2)Holiday Adopt-A-Family - over 82 area corporations, organizations, and families adopted 259 needy families providing over 809 local children with holiday gifts, warm clothing and meals during the holiday season. Over 20 additional volunteers assisted the Cabinet in distributing gift cards, toys, food, and clothing items to an additional 370 local children through Angel Tree programs and additional donations received from the community.

Group Volunteering Available? Yes

Comment: The Holiday Adopt-a-Family Program (Nov.Dec) and Art of Childhood (October 21, 2010) can always use volunteers.  This year, The Children's Cabinet will also need volunteer assistance with the 25th Anniversary Celebration/Grand Opening of the Wilbur D. May Youth Center Event on August 21st, and The Children's Cabinet invites corporate volunteer teams to assist with activities/tethered balloon rides for kids at the Reno Hot Air Balloon Races.

Comment: Young professionals, corporate volunteers, seniors, and community organization members are all welcome to volunteer with the activities listed above.

Skills-Based Opportunities? Yes

Comment: The Wilbur D. May Youth Center is currently under major renovations in order to equip the building for a new HVAC system, communication lines/internet access throughout, and to customize a portion of the building to accommodate the Alternative High School/Tutoring/Computer Labs and Youth Food Pantry Services.  There will be volunteer opportunities for companies/individuals with specialized skills to assist with painting, flooring installation, etc.

Comment: In 2008, The Children's Cabinet Board of Trustees developed and implemented a four-year Strategic Plan.  Each year in February, the Board of Trustees holds a one-day Planning Retreat with the Cabinet's Management Team/Program Staff to review progress to g

Comment: The opening of the Wilbur D. May Youth Center will enable The Children's Cabinet to co-locate youth services with supporting wraparound services, expand academic services for youth, and provide possibilities for space expansions as programs grow. The long-term expansion/operational needs supporting youth services growth would be a possibility--if additional funding became available.

Comment: The Children's Cabinet has an annual fundraising program primarily consisting of grants, fundraising events, and a direct mail program in which there are many regular donors.  The Cabinet encourages major gifs to build annual and multi-year funding committments which sustain critical programs and services in our community.
