Safe Harbors was founded in June 2004 and has helped thousands of ex-offenders and substance abusers regain their lives. Leonard Guevara, the director and founder, had a vision to start this program after completing a similar one himself. He saw how it helped him get back on his feet and give him a support system that he would not have had otherwise. He wanted to be able to give back to the community, and thought the best way to do so was to open a house where people with substance abuse problems could regain their sobriety by living in a clean and safe environment.
Safe Harbors of Nevada provides a supportive environment to qualified individuals in which they can retain and strengthen their sobriety and chemical independence and develop living skills in order to become healthy and productive members of society and reconnect with personal values again. It is designed as a 90-day program for ex-felons and substance abusers, to help them regain sobriety in their life. The program is tailored to each individual to allow them to succeed and have a new outlook on a sober life. The program is always changing and improving, so clients are able to succeed and move back into society.
Due to the growing population leaving prison, Safe Harbors must adjust to meet the increasing need. This includes the possibility of more space and more meeting facilitators. Most immediately, the organization needs to address its main facility.
Serving meals for as many as 48 people a day…three times a day…has taken its toll on the small kitchen, where just one oven/stove unit is used. Leonard plans to proceed with a kitchen renovation, which includes stripping the flooring and installing proper kitchen appliances and equipment. The project cost is $80,000; however, thanks to a handful of generous supporters, the amount needed to complete the project is closer to $50,000. The organization now turns to the greater community for financial support.
